Where are your feet? Recently I read a short story and I just want to share parts of it with you and what I learned. The story I read was about an RLA teacher telling one of her about not doing their math homework in her class. She told them to stay where their feet are. If they are in RLA class they should be focused on that subject only. When they were in math they should focus on math only. This really resonated with me as I thought back over the last couple of weeks. It's so easy to become distracted. I am horrible about this. My mind is going 100 mph and I will get busy doing something and then I will think of something else that needs to be done. Or, I am definitely guilty of sitting in a meeting, and open my laptop and start doing other things. Then I began to think about our students. They are trying to keep up with their work, worry about choir, track, band, theatre, STAAR testing, Interim testing, the list just goes on and on. Some of them are also thinking about their boyfriend or girlfriend, or if their friend group is upset with them, or if their parents are upset with them. Middle school students are under more stress than we may realize. I encourage you to talk with your student about focusing on where their feet are at the time. Are they in math class, are they on the field, are they taking a test? Encourage them to focus on the task at hand and to give their full attention to what they are doing.

Welcome! We want to introduce two new staff members to JMS! Ms. Kacee Steinbeck is joining our SLC classroom. She has years of experience within JISD and is now bringing that experience to JMS. We are so excited to have her with us. She is already working hard and getting to know all of her students. Ms. Regina Phillips Spencer recently moved to our area and will be joining our math team! She brings experience in teaching math, she has served as a math department lead, and has a wealth of knowledge. She will be stepping into her new role at JMS this week. Please join me in welcoming both of these ladies to JMS. We are truly blessed to have them on our team.

Challenges vs. Opportunities: In an ever-changing world we often face challenges or obstacles. Dealing with these, working through these, or overcoming these challenges can often times lead to stress. I find that I often struggle with trying to find that silver lining. It's there and my heart knows it, but my brain takes a while to catch up. I want to encourage our students to start looking at these "challenges" as opportunities. Opportunities to grow and learn and know that it's okay to fail. It's okay to miss a problem or make a mistake - this is how we learn and get better. I see so many of our staff pouring their heart and soul into your students and into their work and it makes me beam with pride. Our students are worth this extra work and we want them to know they can do anything they set their mind to. Here are some points to share with your student: - Challenges are going to come our way. Find someone to rely on and lean on when you need help. - Face the challenge with the attitude that something better is coming. - Learn from mistakes and you will grow in knowledge and wisdom. - Take care of yourself, find an outlet and find time for yourself. It's all in how we look at things - perspective. Every adventure begins with a challenge and ends with a blessing, if we wait.

Success vs. Obstacles: It is clear that education has faced many obstacles this school year and there is the likelihood of even more. Instead of dwelling on the obstacles we face, I would like to point out some of the positive things we have achieved. - Our UIL kiddos placed 2nd at the UIL meet. First time in over a decade that JMS has placed. - Our student scores continue to consistently get better. - We are putting intervention plans in place that I am confident will help struggling students. - We have combined classes for a co-teach model. - We incorporated "Bean Stack" and we have more students reading. - We had a eleven band students perform at the Region 8 All Region Band Concert. - We have given away bicycles for perfect attendance (in a drawing) for two nine-weeks and we will continue this for the 3rd and 4th nine-weeks. - We had a student submit and win the holiday art contest for the district holiday card, two years in a row. - We held a bullying prevention night for parents and families. - We had a student win the Patriot's Pen scholarship award. - We had 26 students place at the Region Band Auditions - one of which placed 1st! - We had our very first musical and it was fantastic. - We have implemented our Locker Club. - We had a very successful Thanksgiving lunch with families. - We honored students' veteran family members with a special luncheon. - Our book fair was well attended and very successful. - Our literacy night was so much fun with games and dress up for the kids. - We recognized our 8th grade athletes in the Fall with an amazing Parent Night. - All of our sports teams have put forth their very best efforts and continue to make us proud. - Our staff continue to find creative and fun ways to impart quality education to our students. This is proof that our teachers, staff and students are putting in the hard work and their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Please encourage your student to keep up the good work.

One Step at a Time: Just before the Spanish-American War, it is told that President William McKinley needed to get a message to General Calixto Garcia, a leader of the Cuban insurgents somewhere in the mountains of Cuba - no one knew where. First Lieutenant Andrew S. Rowan took the letter and left to deliver the message. He did not ask where Garcia was or how to get there. He just completed the task he was given no matter the obstacles. Here is a man, in times of imminent war that took the message and the initiative and completed his mission. No one gave him directions, no one held his hand, he stood tall accepted the challenge and accomplished it. We often find ourselves given a challenge to complete and we ask the questions of who, where, how. I'm very guilty of this - I want a map. Give me some direction and I'm all set. Here is a man who had nothing but a name and a message. He took the initiative to develop his own plan, knowing he could fail or even be killed. How brave he must have been, how honor bound, and how determined. To possess these qualities is not impossible. It is my belief that if we start looking deep within ourselves we can find those same qualities. We just need to put them to use. Think of some things you know you need to complete or work towards. Now, think of all of the excuses you have used not to do it. Not enough time, I'm too tired, it's too difficult for just one person. My challenge this week is to encourage our students to take that first step and then just take one step at a time until they reach their goal.

The 4-P's: Man! It's cold outside. Be sure to bundle up if you venture outdoors. My plans for tomorrow is to bundle up with a good book and relax. I hope all of you do something similar. No matter what you do stay warm. Our district is in contact with Wiliiamson County and the National Weather Service. As we learn more about road conditions and incoming weather we will keep everyone informed. As of today, our plans are to have school as normal on Tuesday. We all know this could change and we will get the word out as soon as we know. During cold weather there are four things to remember: Bring in your plants or wrap them up with plastic and blankets to help keep the cold out. Make sure all of your pets are dry and warm, bring them inside if possible. Wrap or insulate your pipes. At night open your cabinet doors under the sinks and leave your faucets dripping. Check on your people, make sure they are okay. Check on your elderly neighbors that may not have relatives close by. Take care of yourselves and your family during this cold spell.

Welcome Back! Our first week back went quite well. It was wonderful seeing all of the students. I listened to many stories of what they did over break. Some traveled and some stayed close to home and enjoyed time with family and friends. It's always shocking to me how much they grow and mature over just a short couple of weeks. This is the time of year students start to realize that the next level is just ahead. They start to realize that they may need to work a little harder and listen a little more. Our 8th graders start having mixed emotions about the excitement of high school and the anxiety of leaving a campus they are comfortable with. During this last semester please let us know how we can support your student. We will be working hard and discussing goals with students. We will recommend tutoring where we feel it is needed and we will let them know how great they are doing.

A note from your principal: Happy Sunday! Man, this weather is absolutely gorgeous! I truly hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful weather and are able to spend some time relaxing with your families. We had so much fun last week with Homecoming week and all of the dress up days. I saw some great things and was so excited to see so many smiling faces. We should all be back to normal dress code starting Tuesday. Please make sure no shoulders or midriffs are showing and shorts are appropriate length. Only two weeks until Thanksgiving break and until we will be 2/3 of the way through the nine-weeks! Please encourage your student to continue to work hard, attend tutoring as needed and ask questions. Often as we approach holidays our student attendance drops off some. Please know that it's important for students to be in class as much as possible. When they miss instruction it is very difficult for them to get caught up. Of course, if they are sick we want them to stay home and feel better. If your student has to be out please contact our office and let our attendance clerk know. In partnership, Mrs. Mendoza

It's so hard to believe that November is already here. In just a few short weeks we will be winding down with the ending of the six weeks and head into Thanksgiving break! Please continue to have your student stay on top of their studies and attend tutorials as needed. Often as we near the holidays students become excited with the break looming ahead and put their studies on hold. Since the Thanksgiving break will also be the end of the six-week grading period we want to be sure they don't forget to turn in their work and do corrections as needed. We want them to be able to enjoy their break and not worry over assignments. Please reach out to us if you have any questions.

Time Flies Wow! We are at the end of the first nine weeks already! I can't believe that 1/4 of our school year is over. What's that saying? "Blink and you will miss it." The older I get the more this becomes true. Just yesterday I was walking into JMS for the very first time. To say that I have been blessed is understatement. Thank you for joining me on this journey at Jarrell Middle School. Thank you for being patient as we continue to make minor changes on our campus to help our students be more successful. Our teachers are working very hard and have accepted every challenge with a smile. As we start the new nine weeks I want to encourage you to stay in contact with your students' teachers, make sure you have their tutoring schedules and please let us know if we can help.

A Note from Your Principal: October is here! Bring on the cooler weather, fall decorations, and warmer clothes. This is my absolute favorite time of year. Fall makes me reminisce about outdoor fires in the fire pit, hay rides, smores, decorating pumpkins, homecoming, and fall carnivals. Love those memories! We want our students to have fall memories that they love also. As we wind down the first nine weeks I am so excited to announce that we will be giving away two bikes in just a couple of weeks! All students that had perfect attendance will go into a drawing and we will draw one boy and one girl to receive a free bike! This week is the last week of the nine weeks. Please check your students grades and make sure they have turned in all of their work. Teachers are working long hours to make sure everything is getting graded in a timely manner. We have homecoming November 8th and the parade is on the 6th. The Jarrell community does a fantastic job of supporting this event and I look forward to seeing all of the smiling faces.

A note from your principal: Each day our students and staff amaze me. Our staff works so hard each and every day. They put forth every effort to ensure that our students receive the best education. Our students choose each and every day to put forth their best effort. I see them in classrooms have conversations about the work and how they can apply what they are learning to their lives now and in the future. It makes my heart happy to see them excited about learning. Thank you for sharing your students with us each day.
